A New Way to Raise Kids in a Digital World

Parents today feel stuck in a lose–lose scenario.
Hold out on giving your kid a phone or social media?
They feel left out, disconnected, and constantly push back.
Give in before they’re ready?
You open the door to battles over screentime—and place their mental health in the crosshairs of social media algorithms.
Either choice feels wrong.
And parents are left trying to guess what “ready” looks like.
Didn’t the DMV Already Solve This?
One day, while watching my daughter log dozens of hours of driver’s
training, something became painfully clear:
Driving has standards. Phones don’t.
The DMV already knows how to introduce young people to something risky:
A readiness assessment
A structured training sequence
Clear expectations
Adult guidance
Proven safety protocols
There’s a system.
There’s a process.
There’s protection and preparation.
So we asked the obvious question:
Why isn’t there a DMV for the digital world?
Why We Built Headlamp for Families
I’m Scott, co-founder of Headlamp for Families.
This work began in the middle of a storm—my own kids facing mental health challenges, and several close friends walking through severe crises with their teens. It became obvious that untrained access to the digital world was amplifying every vulnerability kids already had.
At the same time, I watched YouTube’s algorithm understand my son’s interests better than I did. Not because I wasn’t involved, but because these platforms are designed to shape kids faster and more deeply than any parent can.
That’s when it clicked:
Kids don’t need technology handed to them before they’re ready. They need a readiness standard and a clear training path—just like driving—so they can step into the digital world with safety, maturity, and intention.
Our Background
Before Headlamp for Families, we spent 13 years building The YouSchool, serving:
20,000+ teens
Thousands of educators, coaches, and parents
Hundreds of middle and high schools
Thousands of transitioning veterans, mostly from Special Operations
We’ve spent more than a decade designing curriculum grounded in:
Self-Determination Theory
Erikson’s developmental stages
Narrative identity formation
Purpose discovery
Mattering science
Executive functioning research
Our work has always centered on the same goal:
Help kids grow into self-aware, purposeful young adults.
Headlamp for Families is the natural expansion of that mission into the digital world.
Our Advisors
Headlamp for Families is guided by a diverse team of experts who care deeply about kids:
Clinical psychologists
Pediatric and mental health leaders
Researchers in motivation, identity, and digital wellbeing
Educators and school administrators
AI specialists and product designers
Moms and Dads who’ve lived these digital challenges firsthand
They help ensure that everything we build is grounded in research, practical for real families, and aligned with how kids actually develop.
Headlamp for Families is a guided training app—built like a digital DMV—that gives families a science-based standard for when and how kids should access devices and social media.
We Believe
We believe kids deserve a meaningful life shaped by their values, not by algorithms.
We believe parents shouldn’t have to choose between “hold out” and “let them loose.”
We believe executive functioning, identity, purpose, and emotional maturity belong at the center of digital parenting.
We believe technology can support a family’s rhythm—not undermine it.
And we believe a new model of digital parenting is possible—one informed by science, grounded in development, and built around gradual, supported training.
Our World
Headlamp for Families is more than an app.
It’s a new tribe of parents choosing to do digital parenting differently.
A community that:
Uses research—not fear—to guide decisions
Builds kids’ readiness before access
Develops executive functioning and maturity step by step
Creates family rhythms that help kids thrive
Treats technology as a skill to learn, not a battle to fight
Follows a development protocol that actually works
This is the world we want to build—one where kids step into the digital world safely, intentionally, and aligned with who they’re becoming.
