"The families who navigate digital life well didn't get lucky. They built something early."
— Scott Schimmel, from the course introduction

There's a window. It doesn't stay open forever.

It's roughly the years your child spends in elementary school — when the family is still the primary world, when your voice is still the loudest one in their head, when the peer group hasn't fully taken over yet.

That window closes. And at some point in the middle of adolescence, someone is going to hand your kid a phone.

The research is clear: most of what protects kids in digital environments was built before they ever touched a device. Not rules. Not parental controls. Inner capacities — practiced in the ordinary moments of family life, over years.

"The goal of this course isn't to prepare you for the phone conversation. The goal is to help you use the window that's still open."

Seven dimensions. Built from 2,000+ studies.

Dr. Evie Trevino, a quantitative psychologist, synthesized thousands of studies across developmental psychology, adolescent neuroscience, and the specific pressures of digital life. These seven dimensions are what actually predict how a kid navigates the online world — not age, not rules, not parental controls.

Dimension 1
Self-Regulation
Managing emotions, impulses, and behavior — especially when something more appealing is available. The skill underneath every other skill.
Dimension 2
Responsibility
Following through, owning tasks without reminders, feeling the real weight of choices. Built through small reps of genuine accountability.
Dimension 3
Executive Function
The brain's management system — planning, organizing, sustaining attention. Develops gradually and needs practice in predictable environments.
Dimension 4
Peer Influence
Navigating peer pressure, knowing one's own mind, holding ground in a group while still genuinely caring about belonging.
Dimension 5
Sense of Identity
A stable, character-based understanding of who one is — not dependent on performance or peer approval. The most protective factor against digital identity confusion.
Dimension 6
Moral Reasoning
Thinking about how choices affect other people — even when no one is watching. The difference between rule-following and genuine ethical judgment.

Every module comes with the Parent Workbook
Research summaries in plain language, reflection questions for you (not about your kid), observable signs of growth to watch for, conversation starters, and a weekly commitment you can actually keep.

8 modules. One for each dimension — plus your home.

Each module maps to a video, then a workbook section. Watch first, then work through it. You can go in order or start with whichever dimension feels most urgent right now.

Module 1
Self-Regulation
The foundation under everything
Impulse, emotion, and the skill that determines how every other skill develops
Module 2
Responsibility
What follow-through actually looks like
Building real accountability through small, graduated reps over time
Module 3
Executive Function
The brain's management system
Planning, attention, task-switching — and why they develop slowly by design
Module 4
Peer Influence
Knowing your own mind in a group
How belonging and independence develop together — not in opposition
Module 5
Sense of Identity
A self that doesn't shift with every wind
The most protective factor against digital identity confusion — and how you build it
Module 6
Moral Reasoning
Raising kids who think about impact
Moving from rule-following to genuine ethical judgment — even when no one's watching
Module 7
Digital Literacy
Reading the digital world with clear eyes
Content has creators with intentions. This module builds the instincts to notice that.
Module 8
Your Screen Environment
The honest part
Your home's screen habits — and how they're either supporting or working against what you're building

Framework for What's Next
A clear picture of how Digital Foundations connects to the Digital Permit Course when your child gets older.

From parents who went through it

"He was able to connect his behavior and reactions at home to being emotionally ready — or not — for a phone. I think another positive factor was that he was hearing all of this from someone other than his parents. This started a whole other conversation."
Carla, parent
"It's not shaming anyone. You're not shaming the parent who already gave them a phone. I love that you're not saying 'no, you can't ever' — it's 'until you can take this course and work on these things.'"
Kelly, parent
"The program helped me explain that my goal isn't simply limiting technology, but helping him develop self-regulation and understand the why behind healthy tech use. He agreed that made a lot of sense."
Karisa, parent

From Scott Schimmel, co-founder

"You don't have to be a perfect parent to do this well. What you need is what you already have: a kid who is growing, and a willingness to grow alongside them."

Scott is co-founder of Headlamp for Families and has spent 20+ years in youth development. The course draws on work with hundreds of families through The YouSchool.

This course was written for a specific season of parenting.

A few questions we hear often

Is this course for me, or for my child?
This one is for you — the parent. Unlike the Digital Permit Course, which a child works through, Digital Foundations is a parent course. You'll watch the videos, work through the workbook, and apply what you're building to the everyday moments of family life.
My child is already 13. Is it too late?
The window described in the course is most open in the elementary years. But none of these dimensions have a deadline — they grow with practice at any age. If your teenager is still at home and you're still parenting them, this framework still applies. It just changes how you apply it.
Do I need to take this before the Digital Permit Course?
Not a hard requirement. But Digital Foundations is the foundation — it gives you the developmental framework that makes the permit process make sense. If your child is 10 or older and approaching phone readiness, both courses complement each other well.
How long does it take to go through the course?
Most parents work through one module a week. At that pace, you're done in 8 weeks. But there's no rush — you have lifetime access, and some modules deserve more time than others.
What's the Headlamp for Families app?
A one-minute daily prompt to keep the formation alive between modules — a question to sit with, something to notice about your child, or a small practice to try that week. It keeps the course from becoming just something you completed once.

The window is still open. That's why you're here.

Headlamp for Families gives you the framework, the research, and the weekly practices to build something lasting — before digital life arrives uninvited.
