For teens who have a phone but not social media yet. Works on any device.

"It's not about keeping you away. It's like, hey, do it right, do it on your terms." David, pilot parent

The phone was one decision. Social media is a whole different road.

Texting grandma and checking the weather is one thing. A customized social feed built to keep them scrolling, an audience that rates every post, and a stream of strangers, trends, and outrage is another.

Your teen is asking. Their friends are already on. And you're stuck choosing between "no" and "fine, I guess."

There's a third option: a clear path they can see, work toward, and earn.

The Digital Permit got them on the road. This is the full driver's license.

Rules of the road. Driving skills. Defensive driving. What to do in an emergency. Teens learn it all, pass the test, and earn social media access one step at a time.

What's in the course

7 sections. 31 short lessons. One license earned.

Every lesson is a short video built around one real question teens ask, ending with one simple step they can take that day. Quizzes check what stuck. No lectures, no scare tactics.

What counts, what's expected, and where the danger zones are

Noticing when your feed is hurting you. Locking down privacy. Breaking the doomscroll loop. Not letting AI do your thinking.

Even good drivers have bad days
What to do after a post you regret. When social media starts to hurt. Handling bullying. Knowing exactly where to turn for help.
Section 7 · 4 lessons
The Open Road
From avoiding crashes to going somewhere on purpose
Making tech features a co-pilot. Seeing through ads and influencers. Building a digital trail you're proud of. Using social media for good.
The finish line
Social Media License
Pass the test. Earn the license. Access opens in stages.
Your teen has shown they know the road. Now you decide together what the first stage of access looks like.
After the license

A speed bump before the scroll. Every single day.

Social apps are built to be opened without thinking. The Headlamp for Families app adds a pause. Before your teen's social media opens each day, they complete a quick check-in: a few questions that help them decide how they want to show up before the feed decides for them.

The questions are grounded in behavioral science and written to be interesting, not homework. It takes about a minute, and it turns autopilot into a choice.

1
Set an intention
What am I opening this for today, and how long do I want to stay?
2
Name a goal
One thing they want to get done or get better at today, offline.
3
Practice gratitude
A quick note on something good, building a pattern that pushes back on comparison.
4
Journal and reflect
Short prompts that help them notice patterns: what drains them, what fuels them.
1 min
That's all it takes. But a minute of intention before the feed is the difference between using social media and being used by it. It's the course's "one simple step," built into every day.
How it works

Four steps. Earned, not handed over.

1
Take the readiness assessment
A short assessment shows where your teen stands across the seven dimensions of readiness. Not a verdict. A starting point.
2
Your teen works through the 7 sections
Short videos and quizzes on their own phone, at their own pace. You get conversation prompts to talk through each section together.
3
They earn the Social Media License
Pass the final test and the conversation changes. Together you agree on the first stage of access and what earns the next one.
4
The daily check-in keeps them steady
Two months of the Headlamp for Families app: a one-minute check-in before social media for your teen, and a daily prompt for you.
What families are saying
"It's not shaming anyone. I love that you're not saying 'no, you can't ever.' It's 'until you can take this course and work on these things.'"
Kelly, pilot parent

A few common questions

Does my teen need to take the Digital Permit Course first?
It helps, since this course builds on it, but it isn't required. If your teen already has a phone and is ready to talk about social media, they can start here.
How does the daily check-in actually work?
Before social media opens each day, the Headlamp for Families app asks your teen a few quick questions: an intention for the day, a goal, something they're grateful for, a short reflection. It takes about a minute. The point isn't to block them. It's to make opening the app a decision instead of a reflex.
Is this a monitoring app? Will I see their messages?
No. Headlamp for Families is built on trust, not surveillance. You won't read their DMs. You'll have a shared language, a clear process, and daily prompts to keep the conversation going.
What does "graduated access" look like?
After the license test, you and your teen agree on a first stage, such as one platform or set time windows, and what it takes to earn the next. You stay in charge of the pace. The course gives you both a fair, clear way to talk about it.
How long does it take?
Lessons are short videos with a quick quiz. Most teens move through a section or two a week. There's no rush, and they can go back to any lesson anytime.
My teen is already on social media. Is it too late?
Not at all. Many families use the course as a reset: a chance to step back, learn the road together, and rebuild access on clearer terms.

Social media is coming. Help them drive it.

A clear path to earn access, and a daily habit that keeps them in control once they have it.
