The Digital Permit Course

Driver's Ed for the Phone. Your kid can earn it.

A structured, research-informed course that prepares kids ages 10–14 for their first phone — and helps parents hand it over with confidence.

Available on mobile and desktop. Parent and child go through it together.

"It's like we have a little baseline." — Kelly, pilot parent

You're not stalling. You're waiting for a better answer than "everyone else has one."

Most parents know the phone is coming. What they don't have is a clear, shared path to get there — something a kid can see and work toward, and a parent can point to without being the bad guy.

Without a process, you're the wall. With one, you're on the same side.

🚗

We prepare kids to drive before handing them keys. A phone deserves the same.

Nobody thinks a teenager should get a car because they really want one. There's a permit, a course, supervised practice, and earned access. Headlamp for Families brings that same logic to digital life.

5 modules. A final test. One permit earned.

Built by expert adolescent curriculum designers for kids ages 10–14. Short videos, quizzes after every lesson, and conversation prompts for parents — designed to be done together over a week or two.

What else comes with the course

2 months of the Headlamp for Families app — daily parent prompts tied to the 7 dimensions of readiness
Quizzes after every lesson — so knowledge sticks, not just exposure
Actionable parent resources — scripts, conversation starters, and what to say when things get hard
Works on any device — mobile or desktop, no separate app required to start

Four steps. One shared process.

1
Take the readiness assessment first
Before the course begins, a short assessment shows you exactly where your child stands across seven dimensions of readiness. Not a judgment — a map.
2
Your child works through the course
Short videos, quizzes, and reflection prompts — designed with and for 10–14 year olds. Most families finish in 2–3 sittings. You follow along and talk through each module together.
3
They earn the Digital Permit
Pass the final test, earn the permit. Your child has demonstrated real knowledge — and you both have something concrete to point to together.
4
You guide the rest — with daily support
Your 2-month app access gives you a one-minute daily parent prompt tied to your child's specific readiness areas. Less guessing. More intention.

What parents said after the pilot

"It took a lot of the pressure and responsibility of making the phone decision off of me and made it feel more objective. I was surprised by his level of understanding and thoughtfulness."
Kasie, pilot parent
"My biggest pleasant surprise was that he was able to connect his behavior and reactions at home to being emotionally ready — or not — for a phone. This started a whole other conversation."
Carla, pilot parent
"He explained dopamine to his little brother three days into summer. The program sparked really productive conversations I couldn't have created on my own."
Karisa, pilot parent
"I thought it was really great that she could realize it — and it's not me telling her. She was sad, but she had hope. That's what matters."
Kelly, pilot parent
"It's not about keeping you away. It's like, hey, do it right, do it on your terms."
David, pilot parent

A few common questions

Do my child and I go through this together?
Yes. The orientation module is for you to watch first. Then your child works through the course — ideally with you following along. Most families do this in short sessions over a week or two, not all at once.
My child already has a phone. Is it too late?
Not at all. Several pilot families used the course to reset after early access hadn't gone well. The assessment identifies specific areas to work on, and the course gives everyone a shared framework to build from.
What does "earning the permit" actually mean?
Your child passes a final test covering everything in the course. That's the moment the conversation shifts — from "maybe someday" to "you've shown you're ready, and we're doing this together."
How long does it take to complete?
Most families finish in 2–3 sittings over a week or two. Each lesson runs 3–7 minutes, followed by a short quiz. It's designed to be done in pieces, not all at once.
What's the Headlamp for Families app?
A one-minute daily prompt — a question to ask, something to notice, a small practice tied to your child's specific readiness areas. Your $45 includes 2 months of access. Parents in the pilot called it one of the most useful parts.

The phone is coming. Help them be ready for it.

Headlamp for Families gives your family a shared path — so the decision is something you make together, not something that happens to you.
